Steam Generator Safety Tips to Keep in Mind for Your New Industrial Plant

Katie Rogers

Opening up your first industrial or manufacturing plant is a big step as a business owner, and you are likely excited to get production underway. But if this is your first time operating a large plant, you will likely have new equipment to take care of, some of which you might be dealing with for the first time. If your plant uses steam generators to get the job done, you will of course want to make sure you maintain a safe working environment for your employees and anyone else who comes onto the premises at all times. To that end, here are some steam generator safety tips to keep in mind.

Avoid a Pressure Build-Up By Inspecting the Inlets Before Every Use

The moment you turn a steam generator on and water starts coming into the system is crucial from a safety standpoint. Make sure each of your workers knows to inspect the inlets and ensure they are fully open and ready to let water in. If you turn on the water with the inlets closed or obstructed, this could lead to a dangerous build-up of pressure within the system. If that pressure gets too high, the generator could be damaged, or in a worst-case scenario, there could even be an explosion that hurts people standing nearby.

Pay Attention to the Quality of the Water Too

You should also keep an eye on not just the inlets that bring water into the system but the quality of the water itself. If the water is not properly filtered or treated, it could be filled with gunk that will cake up the inside of the generator over time. This could lead to parts malfunctioning due to wear and tear or corrosion, leading to mechanical or even safety issues if left untreated. Even when you are in a pinch for more power, it's always worth it to take the time to treat your incoming water before it reaches the generator.

Double Check Your Safety Mechanisms on the Regular

Your steam generator comes equipped with various safety mechanisms designed to turn it off automatically if something goes sideways. One of the most important would be the safety valves that will automatically let steam out if the system believes that the pressure inside the generator has gotten too high. The safety valves and any other safety mechanisms should be checked as part of your pre-operation checklist before every use, just like the water inlets.
